After months of preparation, Gather RI’s building design consultant Charlotte Breed Handy of CBH Architect appeared before Providence’s Historic District Commission (HDC) in June 2023 to present our plans for the building at 189 Broadway.
The original building was a simple, one-story cinderblock from the early 1960s which housed Tally’s, a religious supply shop. Gather RI intends to keep the original as its first floor and add a second floor plus decorative elements and plantings to create a building worthy of an institution.
The plans are being designed to be ADA accessible, including ramps, adequate bathrooms and an elevator. The building will also be energy efficient, with thick walls and a roof full of solar panels.
Local designer Pernilla Bergquist has been hired to guide the interiors and Bernice Wahler Landscapes will be leading the exterior terrace and patio designs to create an oasis in the city. CSL Consulting are on board to serve as owner’s reps to ensure the project proceeds smoothly. The actual construction is anticipated to begin in August 2024 and complete in mid 2025, weather dependent.
